About the Alpine Classic 2011

The Classic Motoring Society of New Zealand Inc is pleased to open entries for the 2011 Alpine Classic Tour. The event is open to all classic and vintage vehicle owners and crews who meet the Tour car and driver criteria. Organisers reserve the right to restrict entries or exclude entrants considered unsuitable for the event. If you have any questions about eligibility give us a call.
As in past years, the Alpine Classic will be run over a combination of sealed and well formed gravel roads, with drivers given the option where ever possible to avoid unsealed sections and take alternative sealed routes if they wish.
The Brief Outline
Day One: To Oamaru
We will be starting at a school south of Christchurch for a fund raising morning tea and briefing.
A gentle, mainly tarmac, run through the hinterland of Mid and South Canterbury with an emphasis on a relaxed day of driving and good scenery. Plenty of time for lunch. We will finish in Oamaru. Nothing formal planned for the evening.
Day Two: Oamaru to Oamaru
A day of classic motoring starting and finishing in Oamaru. Hopefully the inland route we have chosen will bring us some snow for the first time in 6 years and live up to the name Alpine Classic. A mixture of tarmac with some good North Otago gravel sections.
We will end the day with a buffet meal in Oamaru. The dressing theme for the tour is ‘Red and Black’, so see what you can come up with for tonight’s activities.
Day Three: Oamaru to Christchurch (well, somewhere there about)
We will start with a run up the Coast before heading inland again to some nice undulating country. Mainly tarmac conditions with some smooth gravel sections linking them. We will finish south of Christchurch for a fund raising afternoon tea before we bid our friends farewell.
Accommodation
The Red and Black Alpine Classic will be based in Oamaru for the two overnight stops. Entrants are responsible for booking their own accommodation
The function on Saturday night will be at the North Star Restaurant which has motels attached. Those old enough will remember it as the North Side 7 Tavern. A lot different now!
Here are two alternatives:
- Northstar Motels - ph 03 4371190
- Asure Armada Motor Inn - ph 0800 626 278
General
As in previous years, we stress that this is a touring event designed to provide an exciting and scenic touring experience, with no competitive driving element. All participants will be expected to demonstrate the highest standards of driver courtesy and road behaviour and comply with all New Zealand road rules at all times. Participants found to be failing to comply with organisers directions or applicable road laws are liable for immediate exclusion from the event.
The entry fee for 2011 has been set at $275 per car (2 persons), with an extra person surcharge of $100 per head. The entry fee will include start and finish functions, the Saturday night meal in Oamaru, along with alpine plates and decals.
The success of the Alpine Classic Tour over recent years can be largely attributed to the “Alpine Spirit” brought onto the event by the rapidly growing number of “Alpine” enthusiasts who take part. Once again, appropriate attire is considered an integral part of the event.
This year’s Alpine has an obvious theme of ‘Red and Black’ in light of recent events in Canterbury.
Entry Form
An entry form is able to be downloaded (pdf file) and a completed form plus the full entry fee will be required to secure a place on the event. Places are limited by space constraints on Saturday night to 55 cars but a full “wait list” will be run.
This year, to simplify our lives, we’re asking that you make your own accommodation arrangements as both Friday and Saturday nights are in Oamaru. Contact details for two motels are listed previously.
To Finish
Remember to take copies of the completed forms so you know what you’re doing!!
We look forward to sharing another Alpine Classic Tour with you. If you have any queries don’t hesitate to contact us.
